Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Her parents did not allow her to perform with her parents till she reached adulthood, as they feared the anxiety it could create. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began doing it to connect with new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved in New York in search of acting roles on television. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness brought her back to California for theater roles. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of nine episodes of ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
